On February 10, 1958, radar signals were directed at the planet Venus in experiments conducted during an inferior conjunction with Venus. Even though the results obtained from this first trial were ambiguous at best, it laid the foundation for future attempts, launched the field of radar astronomy to a higher level and gave us a better measurement of the astronomical unit.
