How to alienate South Asian neighbours, the Panchsheel way
Apologies for the sarcasm. If there is one thing common between India and China it is how both manage to alienate smaller countries in the neighbourhood. When China stepped into South Asia it came in the backdrop of India’s failure to execute development projects with the speed that it’s neighbour craved and murmurs about India playing big brother in the region. Then along comes China and bamboozles the likes of Sri Lanka, Maldives, Pakistan and Nepal with financial assistance for infrastructure projects and rapid delivery. China’s arrival also provided the leverage for these nations to play off India and China against each other. But in a sign that China has overplayed its hand, these countries are recognising that the Chinese have left them with white elephants due to the difficulty in servicing the Chinese loans and the underutilisation of projects. For all of India’s sloth, it could not be accused of rapaciousness but we certainly could do without repeating blunders like the Nepal blockade that has turned public opinion in Nepal and the current Oli dispensation against India. And along comes BJP president Amit Shah, obsessed with winning the next Lok Sabha elections. While he cannot be credited with strategic depth or understanding, his equating of Bangladeshis with vermins...
